A soccer game is 90 minutes of action. However, there are things about it that may confuse the average viewer.

1) The clock runs up instead of down. That means any injuries, goals, arguments, balls out of play, and more don’t stop the clock. Those breaks in moments go to stoppage time, which is additional time the referee ads to the clock

2) For a regular season game, there is no overtime if there is a tie. The game ends at the conclusion of 90 minutes and stoppage time

3) For a playoff game or knockout match, a tied game moves to Extra Time, which is an additional 30 minutes of gameplay. If there is a tie after that, it moves to a penalty shootout

Overall, a regular season soccer game with 90 minutes of action, halftime, and stoppage time takes about 2 hours and twenty minutes to complete
